World Children’s Day: promoting emotional wellbeing and resilience

Every year on November 20th, the world comes together to celebrate World Children’s Day—a day dedicated to promoting the rights and wellbeing of children from all around the world. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of ensuring that every child is given the opportunity to thrive, learn, and play in a safe and nurturing environment.

The fundamental right to play

One of the most essential rights of children is the right to play. Play is not just a leisure activity; it is a critical component of healthy development. Through play, children learn to express themselves, develop social skills, and build resilience. It is through play that children find joy and a sense of normalcy, especially in challenging times.

According to UNICEF, more than 43.3 million children are living in forced displacement, many for their entire childhood. It is now more important than ever to address their emotional needs and create spaces where these children can play and experience a sense of normality.

Unfortunately, many children around the world do not have their rights fully respected. In crisis situations—such as natural disasters, conflicts, and displacement—children often face significant hardships. Their immediate needs for food, shelter, and safety are prioritised, but their emotional and mental wellbeing can be overlooked. This is where the right to play becomes even more crucial, as it provides a sense of stability and hope.

The impact of the Emergency Smile programme

At RED NOSES International, we are committed to addressing these challenges through our Emergency Smile programme. This initiative reaches an average of 4,000 children per year, bringing joy and emotional support to those affected by crises. Our professionally trained clown artists visit natural disaster sites and displacement camps, using empathy, humour, and compassion to create moments of happiness and connection. Scientific research has also shown this profound impact of humour in fostering emotional wellbeing.

Emergency Smile is more than just entertainment; it is a lifeline for children in distress. By engaging with children through play and laughter through different formats, we help them reconnect with joyful emotions, rekindle hope, and shift their focus to the positive aspects of life. This emotional support is vital for their overall wellbeing and resilience, helping them to cope with the challenges they face.
